Collection: Spearguns
Guide To Spearguns
Length: Arguably the most important consideration when purchasing your speargun, the length of your gun will often be dictated by your target species, terrain, and visibility expected. The lengths most commonly used in East Coast Australian waters are between 500mm to 1200mm (measured from the rubbers at the spear end, to the loading point near the hilt). Shorter spearguns favour newer spearos, hunting in terrain closer to shore, in visibility less than 10 metres. Longer barrels allow extra range, ideal for areas with exceptional visibility, and when it is difficult to close the gap between you and your prey.
Build: The build of your gun is often in reference to its durability, weight in and out of the water, as well as the overall performance. A full stainless steel build of the trigger mechanism is often a popular choice when purchasing a speargun, being more reliable under the strain of the rubbers, as well as having increased durability when exposed to varying water temperatures. It will however, add weight to your speargun, making it feel more 'sluggish' when compared to a partial plastic build, or even titanium componentry.
Customisation: Higher quality guns will often be fitted with multiple attachment points, or other components that allow for modularity. These could include in built rails to fit a reel, or room for additional rubbers.
Pneumatic guns: Pneumatic Spearguns differ from the traditional rubber banded alternative, instead needing to be pressurised, much like an air rifle, before being able to launch the spear. Pneumatic guns have an increased size-power ratio over banded guns, but will often only last 20-30 shots before needing to be re-pressurised.
Pole-Spears: Pole-spears are a simple design, intended for shorter ranges. Commonly built with an Aluminium, Carbon, or Fibre-glass barrel, and a bungee at the hilt end which stretches to the spear head. Spearos targeting Flathead, or Flounder, may benefit from pole-spear systems, although many reef fish can also be targeted effectively.
